What is International Open Access Week?

For twelve years, every October, scholars, librarians, and publishers have come together to focus on issues of access to scholarly literature and knowledge. Open access (OA) is the concept of freely available, no-cost access to knowledge produced by researchers all over the globe. As the organizers of Open Access Week state, “OA has the potential to maximize research investments, increase the exposure and use of published research, facilitate the ability to conduct research across available literature, and enhance the overall advancement of scholarship.” OA Week is meant to foster awareness, discussion, and collaboration around open access on a broad scale.

The theme for Open Access Week 2022 is “Open For Climate Justice” and takes place during October 24-30.

Environmental Peacebuilding: A Conversation with Dr. Erika Weinthal

Professor of Environmental Policy and Public Policy in the Duke Nicholas School for the Environment, Dr. Weinthal is part of an interdisciplinary team of researchers exploring the concept and practice of environmental peacebuilding, defined in her co-authored 2021 paper (published openly in the journal International Affairs) as “the multiple approaches and pathways by which the management of environmental issues is integrated in and can support conflict prevention, mitigation, resolution and recovery.” In a world where armed conflicts continue to rage and the environmental crisis is worsening, Dr. Weinthal’s research emphasizes the critical need for collaboration to resolve those conflicts in keeping with principles of environmental consciousness.

Addressing the theme of Open Access Week 2022, “Open for Climate Justice,” the Duke Libraries are hosting Dr. Weinthal to discuss her work in environmental peacebuilding.

Reaching and Engaging Audiences (RCR Workshop)

Who are the intended users of your digital publication? How can you reach new audiences and keep your existing audiences actively engaged? What are the benefits of making your publication openly available? At this workshop we’ll present some of the ways successful projects connect with their users and promote their work to potential audiences. We’ll also discuss how to effectively and appropriately involve and credit others in one’s research. You’ll leave this session with a solid grounding in the ethical and logistical dimensions of engaging audiences and incorporating audience involvement into your own publication practices.
Format: In person. This two-hour, in-person workshop is meant to promote and engage active discussion around your specific digital publishing concerns. Attendance is capped at 15 students, and participants will be asked to share their specific interests and needs ahead of time, to help ensure that presentation examples and discussion points are sufficiently relevant.

Learning Outcomes: Participants will learn about the ethical and logistical dimensions of engaging audiences and incorporating audience involvement into their own publication practices. Specifically, they will
■ Identify how a target audience can influence digital publishing decisions.
■ List aspects that influence the discoverability of digital publications.
■ Articulate the value of audience engagement for a digital publication.
■ Recognize what work is required in order to support audience engagement.
■ Appreciate the ethical and legal imperatives for crediting contributors.

Understanding Open Scholarship: Concepts and Applications from Open Access to Citizen Science (RCR Workshop)

“Openness” has, in the past two decades, become a ubiquitous term in academe. From open access to open educational resources, it is essential for today’s scholars to have an understanding of openness writ large in scholarship, pedagogy, and scientific practice. The broad-ranging nature of “open” as a concept, however, makes a challenge of defining and navigating its nuances. This workshop provides a comprehensive primer on the many aspects of openness, including historical context and current trends. A small session, in-person, discussion will be encouraged.

  • Open source software
  • Open access to scholarly literature
  • Open content licensing
  • Open data
  • Open science/citizen science

Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss your understanding of openness vis a vis the general definition and concepts.
  • Discover the roots of openness in scholarship from open source software to the movement to make scientific research accessible and comprehensible to the layman.
  • Explore current best practices relevant to openness in scholarship.
  • Challenge you to consider the norms of openness in your discipline.

Bring a laptop and your current understanding of “open” in your field for a participatory RCR workshop (for credit)!
